Man remanded for allegedly stealing car rental vehicle

A 33-year-old man, Andrew Amoah Ampaw, has been remanded into police custody by the Achimota Circuit Court for allegedly stealing a Toyota Corolla worth GH¢100,000 from a car rental company in .

Ampaw, charged with stealing, had pleaded not guilty before the court presided over by Mr. Isaac Addo. He is expected to reappear on March 21.

According to the prosecution led by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Stephen Ahiale, the complainant, Aaron Kofi Mensah, and the accused are businessmen based in Accra.

ASP Ahiale informed the court that on February 29, this year, the complainant reported to the Legon Police Station that on January 29, 2024, he rented a Toyota vehicle to Ampaw for five days, as requested by a friend who runs a car rental business and is a witness in the case.

However, after the rental period expired, Ampaw allegedly failed to return the car to the complainant or extend the rental agreement. He also disabled the vehicle's tracking device, thwarting attempts to locate it.

Further investigation revealed that Ampaw had given the vehicle to someone he owed money to, with the intention of returning it by the end of February 2024. However, he failed to lead the police to the person in question for the vehicle to be retrieved.

Ampaw's failure to provide information on the individual's address hindered efforts to recover the stolen vehicle.
