American filmmaker Spike Lee expresses surprise at lack of interaction with Ghanaian film industry during visit

Award-winning American filmmaker, Spike Lee has stated that he was not approached or engaged by any member of Ghana's film industry during his recent visit to the country.

In an interview with -based Asaase Radio, the ‘Da 5 Bloods' director expressed his interest in sharing trade ideas and communication with Ghanaian filmmakers, adding that he was unaware of the country's thriving film industry.

Spike Lee also revealed that despite his visit being made public, he was not engaged by key stakeholders in the local movie industry, including the National Film Authority.

“I did not know that there is a thriving film industry in Ghana, I know about . And I made the point that it was publicised that I was coming and no one approached me from the film office. I would have loved to meet the people in the film industry here [in Ghana],” he said.

Spike Lee further disclosed his surprise to learn about Ghana's film school, NAFTI (now the University of Media, Arts, and Communication) and reiterated his willingness to communicate not only with the school's head but also with its students.

Spike Lee, who was in Ghana on March 26, was reportedly part of the US Vice President Kamala Harris' creative arts team. During his visit, he was seen with his wife and other seasoned people involved in the arts sector in the US at the state banquet held in Kamala Harris' honour.
